On 22nd August, 1917, after their involvement in the Battle of Langemarck, part of the Third Battle of Ypres, the 6th Royal Irish of 47 Brigade, 16th Division left Flanders and moved south to Arras. On 26th August they moved into the front line at Bullecourt where they remained until 3rd September when they were relieved and moved back to a camp at Ervillers. On 2nd September, the day on which Gerald Poole was killed, the battalion diary recorded that there was enemy trench mortar activity on their right front resulting in two casualties.
